BETTER LATE THAN NEVER
I meant to post this last month, but after reading it you’ll understand how I forgot.
6/12/09
I’m sitting here…at my desk…and it’s after 5am. Let’s go ahead and breeze through the obvious comments and questions – If I’m at my desk after 5am, I probably have work to do. So, I probably shouldn’t be eating the clock writing this – but the truth is this is important, even more important that what I’m currently working on. It’s time for a personal pep talk, a reminder of why I’m OK with being at my desk at what is rapidly becoming 6am. One month ago I was sitting at a desk not too dissimilar from this one, yet it was different in every way. I was an intern in what my old partner called “the C Leagues of advertising,” at the very place where the phrase “corporate policy” was coined and in a city that hadn’t seen a strong, cohesive ad campaign since, well, before the Big 3 were hemorrhaging market share. Enter the whirlwind. First, I was notified of my impending inclusion in CMYK’s 44th issue to be released in the summer of ’09. While this honor didn’t grow my nest egg (it actually shrunk it by $45), it was the first time my work had been recognized at a national, even international, level, albeit primarily a student contest. Second, I was notified that an ambient OOH board I helped create for the ’09 F-150 was shortlisted at the CLIO Awards. Once again, this nod didn’t contribute to my nest egg in any way (though it didn’t subtract from it either), but it was pretty exciting to receive my first professional award show recognition as an intern. Finally, and they say good things come in threes, I was offered a Copywriter position at CP+B in Boulder, CO, widely regarded as the number one agency in the world. And it is just as sudden that I remember what I’m doing here after 5am.
